Ardbeg 'Corryvreckan' is a cask strength 57.1%abv release from this very drinkable and collectable distillery.
The first recorded distillery at Ardbeg probably operated by smugglers as far back as 1794, however it wasn't untill 1817 that the distillery was fully operational. It is one of the three most southerly distilleries on Islay. The distillery remained in the hands of the founding family, the MacDougals, until 1959. Hiram Walker who took the distillery over in 1973 started to run down the maltings which had provided all of the malt required at Ardbeg, eventually closing them in 1980.
The heavily peated malt coming from the large Port Ellen maltings. In 1981 the distillery itself closed, it's two stills silent - many thought forever. The distillery had closed several times before, in the war years and during the depression years 1932 - 35. Then in 1989 it opened for two months a year till 1996 when it closed indefinitely again. Then in walked Glenmorangie with 7.1 million pounds the rest is history as they say!
