The Bruichladdich Legacy 32 year old whisky is one a series of occasional outstanding vintages, selected by Jim McEwan , Bruichladdichs Master Distiller. They are bottled at natural strength, non chill filtered and caramel free. They are perfectly balanced and harmonious. The numbered bottles carry the image 'Lossit Bay, Islay' by celebrated artist Frances Macdonald.
Bruichladdich (pronounced Bruck-laddy) is a fiercely independent Islay distillery, and is managed by one of the whisky worlds best known characters - Jim McEwan. On the west side of Loch Indaal, facing Bowmore, the distillery has had a chequered history. Closed in 1993 and then worked for just six weeks in 1998, it wasn't until 2001 that distilling restarted seriously when it was reopened by the new owners, Bruichladdich Distillery Company. Originally it produced peaty Islay malts then in the 1960's it switched to an unpeated style, and the malt kiln was dismantled (it is hoped that this will be re instated in the passage of time, as will a Lomond still). Bruichladdich now produce whisky with a variety of peating levels and styles in their own inimitable way. The distillery is Islay's largest employer.
Jim McEwan's Tasting Notes
Colour: Dazzling golden copper
Body: Sensationally soft and seductive with the texture of warmed honey. This is an elegant, classy, ritzy, swish, bang up to the minute, cool, vogue, cult single malt which really steals the show
Nose: Mellow rich bourbon vanilla, soft marzipan, honeyed mints, coconut milk, buttered almonds, butterkist, poached pear, peach, mango & meadow sweet all gently held together by the magnificent aromas of 200 year Ozark Oak which covets the spirit gently as it drifts from the glass like pollen on a summer breeze. It's a wonderfully harmonious olfactory extravagence. Enjoy the show!
Palate: It's sublimely Scottish, full of passion and warmth and it treats the tongue like a catwalk, treating the taster to the full programme of how a hand-crafted Celtic spirit made with ancient skills can still compare with the best on offer. The richness of the spirit is beautiful, layering the palate with the intense waves of aromas experienced by the olfactory senses. It's sublimely sweet, fruit & oaky, confident that time has added the magic that few malts can achieve.
Finish: This classy feline single malt meanders slowly away daring you to refill the glass and relive an utterly wicked experience.
