Bushmills is the oldest distillery in Ireland, dating from 1608 when it received it's licence to distill. By 1743 it was in the hands of smugglers then in 1784 it was again a licensed distillery.
In 1885 it caught fire but from then on the distillery continued to expand in the hands of Samual Boyd, inspite of recessions, prohibition and wars. The distillery passed through the hands of Isaac Wolfson and English brewers Charringtons before becoming a subsidiary of Irish distillers.
