The Cardhu 12 year old whisky is smooth, sweet and mellow with a good length. It is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume.
Cardhu Distillery up to 1981 was known as Cardow and is known as 'Black Rock' in gaelic. The legal distillery was established in 1824, however illicit distilling had taken place previously on the site. In 1884 it was rebuilt on a new site and expanded again in 1887. In 1893 it was taken over by Johnnie Walker and sons, and to this day Cardhu is a major heart of the Johnnie Walker brands.
In 1960/1 two further stills were added making six in all. Recently the name Cardhu caused much concern when it was released briefly as a vatted malt but called a 'Pure Malt'. However pressure from all concerned in the whisky industry and common sense prevailed and once again it is a 'Single Malt Whisky'. Interestingly, the problems raised have helped to establish what a Single Malt Whisky is.
