The Glenlivet 1983 French Oak Finish is one of Glenlivet's Cellar Collection. Distilled in 1983 and bottled 2003 at 46%abv.
Glenlivet, or more precisely The Glenlivet, was founded by George Smith in 1824 as all of the bottle tops will tell you. His was the first legal distillery, inspite of violent opposition from the illicit distillers and smugglers.
The area of the Glenlivet was probably one of the most famous in Scotland in the days of whisky smuggling and there were numerous illegal stills. Thanks to George Smith, the name 'Glenlivet' became synonymous with quality, with many distilleries trying to attach this name to their own distillery. However, after litigation in 1880 George Smith's became the only distillery that could call itself Glenlivet Distillery (although some were allowed to use 'Glenlivet' as a hyphenated prefix to their own name). In 1858 the present distillery was constructed.
In 1953 it merged with Glen Grant and in 1977 became part of Seagram. It is now owned by Chivas Bros (Pernod Ricard).
