The Lagavulin 12 year old 2009 release has been bottled at a cask strength of 57.9%abv.
The Lagavulin distillery (meaning Mill Hollow in gaelic) was established on the south coast of Islay in 1816 and since that time has produced whisky of exceptional quality. Originally built with two stills then two further stills were added from the adjacent Malt Mill distillery when it closed in 1962. In 1966 these old coal fired stills were replaced by steam fired ones to the same design. In 1974 malting stopped at Lagavulin, the malt now comes from Port Ellen maltings.
The peaty make is then put in third fill ex Bourbon casks and matured at any of several warehouse sites - Lagavulin itself, the old Port Ellen warehouses or some at Caol Ila, with the remainder on the Scottish mainland.
